This study aims to analyze and interprete Ned Rorem’s work Poémes pour la paix demonstrated by the author in her graduate concert. Honored as “the world’s best composer of art songs” by《Times》, Rorem is a remarkable American music composer and writer. Rorem has composed more than 500 vocal works. General audience can easily appreciate the French style in many of his works. Poémes pour la paix was written in 1953 while Rorem had his sojourn in Paris, the lyrics were selected from French poetry of the 15th and 16th century, with a consistent theme of war and peace. The selection of French poetry is uncommon in Rorem’s works, for he is usually devoted to English literature. This work, written for medium voice, is thought-provoking in both content and compostional style. The analysis of this work was done in hope of providing understanding for singers and future researchers interested in Rorem’s works. May hap, this study will pique more interests of audiences interested in Rorem’s French works.
