The Analysis and Interpretation of Hsin-Tsai Huang’s Dizi Concerto“ Hualien Tone Poem ”

Inspired by Taiwanese aboriginal Puyuma and Amis, Hualien Tone Poem is a Dizi concerto composed by Hsin-Tsai Huang. So far there’s few concerto produced which is sourcing from Taiwanese aboriginal. How to approach, perform and interpret is indeed a time-spending as well as crucial issue for Dizi performers to consider. By researching composing technique and form analysis of Chinese composition containing aboriginal materials, the author is trying to dig deeper performing skills and sort out an ideal interpretation for the piece ‘Hualien Tone Poem.‘

At first, the author collected as well as integrated materials from three aspects: related documents, aboriginal music, and Dizi performing skill. In addition to composition analysis and comparison, interview the composer and performers is also supporting to get better understand of context and performing issues. Finally, as a Dizi performer too, the author would discuss the topic with own performing experience.

At the same time of celebrating its 11th anniversary this year, Hualien Tone Poem has stayed a representative and significant status in Dizi field. This research is expected to bring a clearer understanding of composition with aboriginal materials as well as the relationship between leading and accompanied instruments. Besides, a profound comprehend to performing skills will improve interpretation approach, which would be a useful reference to researchers afterwards.
