The aspect of studies include five thousand years of chinese history with rich culture, bamboo is closely related with people’s life, and the formation of bamboo culture is a very important part of cultural symbolization. Research directions include: (1) the type and application of bamboo; (2) bamboo and cultural transmission; (3) bamboo art and literature; (4) bamboo and material life; (5) bamboo and social life. The study of bamboo culture is mainly applied to art and design, which expects not only to provide rich information for contemporary design, but also to shows distinctive characteristics in artwork.

Bamboo belongs to grass family, and China is always known as the “hometown of bamboo” in the world. Both bamboo species and productions rank No.1 in the world. The transmission of bamboo culture in the early pre-Qin era was presented by brush tube made of bamboo and bamboo slips, used for caligraphy lettering and writing, which made very important contribution to cultural heritage, and promoted the development of calligraphy and painting in China. Thereafter, since people have widely used bamboo in transportation, food, home, building, and so many aspects, bamboo has been closely related to people’s life and become an essential resource for life. In art and literature, bamboo stems are upright and evergreen with good toughness, which is beling hailed as one of the “four gentlemen” with plum, orchid, and chrysanthemum. Bamboo also regarded as “three friends of winter” with plum and pine. Because of these characteristics, bamboo widely appeared in poetry and painting since ancient times, which was favored by the literati who exhibited tough and tall styles with gentlemen manners through bamboo. Further bambon also affected the development of bamboo craft, music, garden art, religion and folk culture. Bamboo has become a symbol of cultural significance, highlighting profound spirit and cultural traditions.

Oriented with bamboo aesthetic value and cultural orientation, this study aimed to understand the origin and meaning of the bamboo itself with a single or topic theme through art, literature and life folklore, analyzed bamboo shape, structure and historical features. Through point of view the design viewpoint and combining with abundant of literature, we may learn about the symbolism and cultural meaning behind the images, and collect the cases which may apply, to cultural creativity design and contemporary design, further, to became a very important inspiration in creation.
