The Analysis and Interpretation of Tyzen Hsiao’s five Taiwanese Art songs

Tyzen Hsiao(1938-1956) is an indispensable composer, pianist, conductor, and educator in Taiwan. The thesis is to discuss the five art songs: “Tiám sim tànn”, “A bú ê thâu-tsang”, “Phái gín á”, “Pâpâ e pit”, and “Tsi̍t ki tsháu”, which are composed by Tysen Hsiao.

The thesis begins with the upbringing, education, music career, and the characteristic style of songs of Tyzen Hsiao. Following by the outline of the biography and characteristic style of works of the four poets: Xiang Yang(1955- ), Lai He(1894-1943), Zhuang Bo Lin (1932-2015), and Ya Xi(Xu Pi Long, 1940- .), then, the substantial analysis and induction towards the five art songs and their poetic lyrics. Last, the discussion of vocal technique, Taiwanese diction, and the relationship between the vocal and the piano accompaniment from the singer’s perspective.
