This thesis focuses on Mussorgsky’s piano work《Pictures at an Exhibition》. I divide my research into 5 chapters. Chapter 1 deals with the motivation and purpose of my study, and the scope and method I research into this work. Chapter 2 talks about Mussorgsky’s music career. Chapter 3 emphasizes the background of his composing in 《Pictures at an Exhibition》and the influence on Debussy. Chapter 4 seeks out the interpretation, analysis, musical language and the painting in this work. Finally, I will make a conclusion by summarizing my research findings in chapter 5.
