Saint-Sa�ブs’s Sonata in E flat Major for clarinet and piano, op. 167 is composed in 1921. In the year of Saint-Sa�ブs’s death, he composed sonatas for oboe, clarinet and bassoon respectively. Saint-Sa�ブs dedicated the sonata to the clarinetist, Auguste P�臆ier. The sonata presents by classical form and pure instrumental composition. And the piece has an important position in the clarinet repertoire. Therefore, it aroused my interest to look into the piece. My thesis is divided into three parts; the first is Saint-Sa�ブs’s life, historical background, musical style and the background of the piece. The second part is the analysis of the sonata’s structure. The third is the interpretation of the sonata; including musical terminology, rhythm, intensity and the comment of some audio information. The piece becomes so important that almost every clarinetist would play it. Clearly identifying the composing material, knowing the relevance in each movement of the sonata, and deepening understanding the structure of the sonata can help people to enrich the musical content.
