Sinn Sing Hoi, who was an outstanding Chinese composer during the Sino-Japanese War in the 1930s. He composed over 300 works to encourage the people to fight against the Japanese invaders in different musical forms, such as 93 pieces of songs in unison, 43 pieces of ensemble chorus, 54 pieces of vocal solo, 5 choruses, a song cycle, a revue, and an opera, some of his compositions possess patriotic enthusiasm with a distinctly Chinese style. In addition, he published more than 30 articles of music reviews. Sinn Sing Hoi expressed his love for the Chinese people, his attitude to the revolution, and his understanding of life in his music.
Sinn created many unique and innovative film songs in Shanghai. Among those, the songs in the movie ‘Song at Midnight’, which is about anti-feudalism and people’s pursuit of freedom, are his masterpieces. Encompassing lyrical and dramatic characteristics, the songs are full of passion. Sinn integrated diverse musical techniques like delicate, euphemistic and evocative, to intertwine lyricism and militant and convey a strong sense of artistic charm.
