Chinese Yangqin have only been developed for about 400 years, thus, there are only limited numbers of music pieces of its own, especially those created by Yangqin performers. From those music works, the author thinks there are some excellent pieces which have transcendent meanings in the history and the development of Yangqin art. Hence, the author chose two of these compositions “Lush Green Bamboo Groves” and “Nocturne of Yaoshan” as the objective of this interpretation thesis.

After some decent literature review and musical form analysis, the author has found many deep insights of these two music work and help build the interpretation from an unique point of view.

Xiang Zuhua, the composer of “Lush Green Bamboo Groves”, and Xu Xuedong, composer of “Nocturne of Yaoshan”, are both Yangqin performers and composers. Back to the time when they were composing, they both thought thoroughly about the performing skills and cleverly blended into their works, as a result, their works are usually more reasonable and easier to perform. Despite their homogeneity, there are still some differences between these two works such as music structure, harmonic texture and characteristic performance skills. All the differences make both “Lush Green Bamboo Groves” and “Nocturne of Yaoshan” unique, special and representative music pieces, and were beloved by performers from generation to generation.
