This thesis : A discussion on musical characterization in W.A. Mozart's opera Don Giovanni,focusing on the roles of Don Giovanni and Leporello focus of is how small music materials produce concrete and characteristic psychological connections for the listener. The author hopes that through this preliminary discussion, readers can better experience the story and aesthetic that the composer wants to present. The main subjects of this thesis are the roles of Don Giovanni and Leporello in W.A. Mozart's opera Don Giovanni, the second of Mozart's three Da Ponte operas.

This thesis is mainly divided into six chapters for discussion. The first chapter is the introduction, which covers research motivation, the goal and scope of this thesis, and research method. The second chapter is an introduction to Mozart's life, his operas and the main characteristics of his operas. The third chapter is an introduction to the Italian opera librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte, his life and style of libretto-writing, the sources for his Don Giovanni libretto, as well as an introduction to the plot and characters of Don Giovanni.The fourth chapter is an analysis and comparison of the characters of Don Giovanni and Leporello in Mozart's opera. The fifth chapter continues with observations on the musical materials for these two roles. This chapter is the core content of this thesis. It will discuss the personalities of Don Giovanni and Leporello's respective characters based on their musical materials and their text. The sixth chapter is the conclusion.

After this preliminary discussion, the author believes that analyzing small musical motives will be of great help to singers in interpreting Mozart's music, and in performance they will be able to more accurately grasp important turning points in the music and emotions of Mozart's operatic roles.
