Abstract
The basic structure of this thesis is to examine my creation process. After entering the Graduate Institute of Fine Arts, I started learning new media art and immersed myself in the field. Since then, I never stopped gaining knowledge of artistic creation. I analyzed the question of 「who am I? 」during the process of creating my works. The start point of all my creations is the concept of “myself”. My artworks are expected to express myself fully since I consider that creation is self-recognition and self-acknowledgement.
Chapter one expounds the motivation of my creation and my choice of new media art. After I went through a series of exploration on the topic, the reasons why I chose new media were gradually made clearer through my artworks and essays.
Chapter two briefly discusses the development and application of art medium. Video art and body and performance art have maturely developed in some foreign countries by now. The artists have been able to employ new technological media to present their creation and inspiration, and those presentations are noticeably different from former times
Chapter three analyzes the relation between my works and art. In the period of 2004 to 2008, I have been looking for ways to completely deliver the power of my body, mind and soul to my creations.
Chapter four inspects the manner with which I express my works: can the viewers perceive the creator’s feelings behind the works?
The last chapter draws out the conclusion. The critic of American new media art, Gene Youngblood, once said: “All art is experimental, or it is not art.”
These “experiments” open the artists’ eyes and initiate the revolution of art styles. I consider my creation as a self-experiment, in which I intend to discover the meanings of self-existence. The experience made me understand that it is always not easy to utilize any medium on an artwork. With this understanding, I am able to think deeply about the possibility of my creation, and subsequently, map out the direction and the goal of my future works.
