It can be divided into three major periods in the development of the melody and the reforming of the musical instrument, since the erhu, this musical instrument appears. People who represent in the first important period (1915 to 1949) are Liu Tianhua and Ah Bing. They created the solo for erhu individually, even expanded the performance of erhu more profoundly and increased the expression of the music.
In the second important period (1949 to 1979), several professional performers had been trained with the result of the rise of the professional music school and the specialized erhu tutoring systems. Meanwhile, many pieces for erhu solo were composed. Most creations tune in the first half of this period was composed by performers who comprehend the traditional music, skill, and properties of this musical instrument. Besides, they could master and were familiar with the music environment even though they had not been trained professionally. The creation tune in the later period began to get involved by the composers with professional training, and Liu Wenjin is one of the representative figures.
In the third important period (1979 to 1999),with the large-scale types melody appears, the modern creation techniques which break through the traditional form also appear in the melody progressively. "The first erhu rhapsody "which was composed by Wang JianMin was considered to be a representative work of this period. It was succeeded in opening up the new creation form at the same time. In recent years, more and more modernist song of creating have been composed. The technique and the display potentiality on erhu have kept on improving.
