Isang Yun (1917-1995) is a Korean-German composer of the twentieth-century. In his lifetime of creative career, his works not only show out the contemporary techniques of western music, but also fuse the spiritual connotation of the oriental music sounds and thought, in order to make his music enrich and multifaceted, and formed his own unique music language. In the 1960-70s, most of his works were taken from Korean traditional music forms as the titles. The thesis will explore Isang Yun’s a chamber works Gagok (1972), it is taken from the Korean traditional song’s titles of the same name. In which, the intention is from the pitch and timbre the two dimensions, in order to explore the composer under western contemporary compositional techniques, concealing the inherent Korean traditional musical culture thought and its association.
