Abstract

From the Internet 20 years ago to the big data and AI nowadays, image circulation has become faster and more intense. Today, what we talk about is no longer limited to oral communication, books, and TV–– an apparatus of human-oriented media, but a vision of algorithms in macro control. Through hyperlinks between image and brain, we configure a network of brain imaging.

This thesis encompasses the gaps in narrative media and the reflexivity in moving image. The image as an illusion, which make time-image possible. Chapter I begins with the bifurcation of time, including two systems: memory and reality. How to expand the expression of the image in the bifurcation of time? I quote the concept from Deleuze’s work "A Thousand Plateaus" and try to delineate a nomadic strategy with non-mainstream YouTube videos. In Chapter II, I analyze the state of moving image in different time and space through dichotomy, including new media art, film, occultism and other examples, from disorder to order, memories to moments, fiction and illusion. Chapter III, I take a brief review of my two past works. Chapter IV provides a discussion of the reflexivity in documentary film as a possibility for video work, as well as the interplay between text and image. In Chapter V, I absorb the experience of my previous works and address as to how to construct an open narrative video work which both contains the imagination of distance and local emotions. By reorganizing the found footages, I explore the possibility of non-subjective interpretation in new media art.
