The “Decree” provides us with a "presupposition" or "possible" outcome that expresses meanings in literal symbols that are metaphors for the present reality and the foreseeable future. Predicting and resolving future events is one of the ways people rely on to adjust their minds when they are frustrated. The "Chinese Fortune Stick" is also one of the means of expression of the decree. As a dialogue between the gods and their devotees, the textual representation of the "Divination Poem/Lottery Poem based on a Chinese Fortune Stick" takes the form of a modern poem, which invariably creates limitations in relation to the user's understanding of the text. Therefore, it is hoped that the meaning of the decree will be reconnected with the viewer's thoughts on the images and events. This artistic research adopts the Literature Analysis Method to analyze the historical data, texts and poetic imagery expressed in the Chinese Fortune Sticks. Also, this study adopts the Field Research Method and Actual Photography to record the connection between contemporary temples, history and the Chinese Fortune Sticks. Meanwhile, the Chinese Fortune Sticks are pictorially transformed into illustrations in the "surrealist" style.
In this paper, we will transform the poems into images and integrate the local cultural perspective with them, based on the meanings of “Master Thunderstorm’s 100 Chinese Fortune Sticks” and the human interactions within the Temple of Lord of Blessing and Virtue in Northern Taiwan. In this study, the artistic research will be conducted in three parts: (1) The history and culture of Taiwanese temples and the connotation and structure of the Chinese Fortune Sticks. (2) Graphic examples and representational techniques used in divination cards. (3) The texts of the poems are drawn from the hexagrams in I-Ching (The Book of Changes), history, myths, novels, play scripts, etc., and the images are reproduced in a surrealistic style.
The graphical representations of the Chinese Fortune Sticks are used in the academia to express the heritage of Chinese history, to reduce the distance of interpersonal communication in the humanistic aspect, and to record the existence of images of the time in artistic expression. All three are of substantive significance. Through photography, this artistic research captures images at the Temple of Lord of Blessing and Virtue and integrates the human interactions into the Chinese Fortune Sticks, thus completing the creation of the illustration images and meanings of image symbols for 12 Chinese Fortune Sticks.
