Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 – 1750) is a famous composer and musician in the late

Baroque era. He never made a brag of his through knowledge in music. He always considered

that God endowed him with his musical talent. He dedicated his entire musical life to the Great

Glory of God. He also devoted his life to music to entertain people in his time. Bach was not

only with a great talent to compose opera, but also many other type of music, e.g. orchestra

and keyboard music. He enriched the established German musical styles by his skill in adaptation of rhythms, forms and textures from both Italian and French. Though he lived

in a very conservative society, he was not strained under pressure to compose. He was one of

the main composers of the Baroque era and he is now considered as one of the greatest

composers of all time. He made a great historic influence on the development of music.

The word “Sonata” in 17th centry was used to describe a composed music to be played by the instruments. The movements of the sonata were in binary forms, the church sonata and

chamber sonata, pending on the occasion where it was played. From the melody parts of view,

Sonata for flute and harpsichord in A major BWV 1032 is considered as a Trio Sonata. The

first solo melodic part is played by the flute. The second solo melodic part is played by the

right hand of harpsichord player and his (her) left hand is responsible for playing the keyboard

to harmonize the voice. The brasso continuo is played in part by either the harpsichord or the

cello. The style of the three movements is proceeded by using the flute to play the solos

episodes and harpsichord the tutti ritornello. It is played alternatively in quest-answer

fashion to create a clear type of contrasts in voices. These combined plays achieve the

characteristics of a Concerto grosso. Bach did not clearly signalize his composed sonata as the

dancing music in the beginning of the movement. He used the characters of harmonic music

mood instead. Three of his movements, however, fully filled with characteristics of music for

the palace dancing. Joyful and free like a fish in the water, his motion and spirit to compose

appeared to be not strained under any kind of pressure. A major BWV 1032 was composed by

Bach at Leizpig. The original manuscript composed by him was confirmed by a number of

researchers based on his hand-writing and personal signature. However, the most portion of

the first movement of this sonata was missing and it was later accomplished by others. This

portion published to date is not considered as his masterpiece.

This thesis is my study on a masterpiece of Bach Johann Sebastian, A major flute

BMV 1032. It includes five chapters as follows:

1. Explain the motives, the goals, covered areas, and my methods of this study;

2. Describe briefly the family and the life of Bach Johann Sebastian;

3. Describe specifically the play of sonata A major BWV 1032 and also briefly the

flute playing methods in the Baroque era;

4. Analyze A BMV 1032 composed by Bach based on the form and style, the mood and character as well as the composing techniques.

These were then used to compare with the missed first movement accomplished by others;

5. Describe my view as the author and make my summary of this study.
