Jean・Sibelius is a Finish composer from the 19th to 20th century. His compositional style originated from the Romantic to Modern music. His genre of composition include symphony, orchestral works, dramatic music, chamber music, choral works, operas and instrumental works, among those, his symphonies and orchestral works are the most well-known.
The “Five pieces for violin and piano, Op.81” was composed between 1915 to 1918. This research paper will study and analyze this work by examing the life of Jean・Sibelius and his composition style; and comprehend his musical spirit and summarize his compositional techniques. Furthermore, provide some performing and interpretation advises for other performers.
This research is comprised of five parts. Chapter one is my motivation and research goal. Chapter two is a detailed outline of Jean・Sibelius’s life and musical style. In this chapter I will focus on the relationship on historical and political background of Finish culture and Sibelius’s compositional style. Chapter three is the work’s creative background and analysis. In this chapter, I will concentrate on this composition’s origin and source material. Chapter four focus on performance and interpretation. I will focus on how to interpret this work and provide some technical and practicing guideline for other performers. The final chapter is my conclusion, I will summarize my research and hope to provide some basis for other study in the future.
