In the era of the Internet, the integration of smartphones with the Mobile Internet allows people to stay in contact anytime and anywhere. Initially created as a simple text messaging device, smartphones have evolved into multimedia devices. With a plethora of social media applications, such as Facebook, Twitter, and other community-feature applications, on the market, smartphones enable people to share and discuss opinions. Now, in an era where everyone has a smartphone, people are becoming increasingly like cyborgs, a hybrid of man and machine.
The interactive installation, “HyperVoice II” utilizes smartphones, and the Mobile Internet to discuss this cyborg phenomenon. Through a mobile application, participants are able to express their thoughts and opinions about trending topics over the Internet, and let their voices be heard. With the interaction amongst many participants, transmitted messages and opinions overlap with each other over time, creating a collaborative exchange of ideas over the Internet. This is the cyborg phenomenon.
Therefore, this work not only possesses the qualities of net art, such as interactivity, collaborative creation, and aggregation, but it also recreates a collective consciousness and voice formed by people’s access of the Internet using their smartphones. In the literature review, an in-depth discussion on the development and characteristics of the Internet and net art, mobile devices and cyborgs, mobile phone art, and related artworks is conducted. This serves as an introduction to the discussion on creative concepts and methods used in creating “HyperVoice II”.
