A Study on the Inheritance and Establishment of Music Database in the Elementary School of Tsou''s Songs in Taiwan Alishan Township's Cover

The goal of this research is to study the Tsou''s songs in Taiwan Alishan township gathered by ethnomusicologists and music educators. Through music content analysis, we evaluate whether these songs are appropriate for music education in elementary schools. After collecting our analysis results, we establish “music teaching database in the elementary school of Tsou''s songs in Taiwan Alishan township” and a website for music teacher to search out the database in their teaching.

We use qualitative research method. The main part of this research contains of reviewing previous works, investigating related background theories and methods that worth emulating. Together with in-depth interview, we attempt to understand the current state of inheritance of Tsou’s songs in Taiwan Alishan township and the background meaning of these songs. The qualitative results are used for music analysis, collection and establishment of the database. In the end, after analyzing the music content of the collected songs, we build a search engine for music database of Tsou’s songs in Taiwan Alishan township.

According to our results, we come to three conclusions:

1. The current state of inheritance of Tsou’s songs in Taiwan Alishan township:

In this respect, it can have some effects through schools, ceremonial behaviors, and formation of local clubs. However, there are no specific teaching materials. Therefore, the Tsou’s people expect to improve the situation by song collection, digital items, and internet access.

2. Analysis results for source materials of Tsou’s songs:

The tonality of these songs are mainly la pentatonic scales with

Intervals of 1st~4th relationship. The ranges often lie between octave to 11th. These songs are diverse in the meters, and characterized by harmonic parallel choral singing. The diverse music elements are quite appropriate for music teaching in elementary schools.

3. The music database is implemented by the Microsoft Access.It can be

searched and used for teaching reference. In details, this music database

provides teachers with the reference to the proper grade to learn the

songs and possible applications of a particular song.

In conclusion, we propose personal advises according to our results to serve as a useful reference material for the government, schools in aboriginal area, and future research.
