Nobuyoshi Araki proposed the notion of “Private Portfolio” by declaring his belief that photography should be based on personal life experiences, and that it should not avoid personal or private matters. This concept inspired the author to extend this way of image-making into video art and put forward the idea of “Private Video”.
This creative study applies a literature review along with an observation and analysis of artworks to elaborate on the process of creating “Private Portfolio” that invoke topics of sexuality. Through practical creation and exhibition, the author also proposes arguments and ideas for a series of personal works.
The series of works entitled “Intimate Monogatari” reflects many personal, private, and even sexuality-related issues. In a video installation “Intimate Monogatari”, a naked body and the tentacles of living beings interact with and give pleasure to each other. The images of viscous secretions allow the viewers to indulge in a delusional space. “Intimate Monogatari” expresses sexual fantasies and applies suggestive image and symbols to present personal desire and intuition.
“Intimate Monogatari” was awarded as an outstanding work in the photography and new media category of the “Keelung Fines Arts Exhibition,” while “Fantasy Monogatari” won first prize in the digital art category of “Huang Xi Art Exhibition.” Finally, the works from the “Intimate Monogatari” series were exhibited in a solo show at Waley Art in Taipei. Exhibiting the works enabled the author to gain even more professional experience and knowledge, as well as gather suggestions and feedback for further development.
