Nino Rota (1911-1979) was a famous Italian film-score composer, furthermore, he was also a pianist, conductor, composer and pedagogue. Other than the well-know “The Godfather”, his most notable film-score include those that he collaborated with the famous film director, Federico Fellini (1920-1993), such as “Lo sceicco bianco”, “Le notti di Cabiria” and “Prova d’orchestra”. He was also the composer of the Trombone Concerto that this thesis is aiming to analyze.

This thesis contains five chapters: introduction, background of the composer and history of the development of trombone, musical analysis, interpretation notes, and the conclusion. The first chapter discusses my motivation for the analysis and my analytical goals, as well as the research range and methods. The second chapter discusses Rota’s life and background, as well as the history of the development of the instrument trombone itself. The third chapter contains the analysis of the work’s motifs, form and compositional techniques, aiming to illustrate the piece in its fundamental levels. The fourth chapter discusses the difficulties I’ve encountered interpretating the piece, and the solutions to those difficulties. finally concludes the whole thesis in the fifth chapter.
