Composer, Hsin-Pin Lin, is a professional yangqin player who has studied music arrangement at Berklee College of Music in the United States. In recent years, she has combined her areas of expertise and has been active in teaching yangqin, music arrangement, and composing music in Taiwan. This study investigates the yangqin concerto, The Beauty of Dawushan, composed by Hsin-Pin Lin. The composition is related to the characteristics of Paiwan music. In addition to the beautiful melody, the composition involves unique composition techniques, and the skills required for performing the concerto are also challenging.

In this study, the yangqin concerto, The Beauty of Dawushan, was explored in depth through a literature review, in-depth interviews, analysis of composition techniques, and music analysis. First, the literature review of the study looked into literature on models of yangqin, methods for music composition, and music materials of Paiwan. The theories applied in the study were based on the research from the literature review. Second, in-depth interviews were conducted with composer, Hsin-Pin Lin, to better understand the composition techniques that were often used by Lin and to reveal the composing features of The Beauty of Dawushan. Lastly, performing the yangqin concerto, The Beauty of Dawushan, requires great skills. Thus, this study focuses on how to express the characteristics of the concerto and the emotion that the composer wants to convey when playing.

With the methods above, it is hoped that the connotation and the expression of the yangqin concerto, The Beauty of Dawushan, could be deeply grasped. Hopefully, the study could serve as a reference for future studies, composers, and players. The author believes that the study sheds light on Hsin-Pin Lin’s work and helps people embrace music's beauty and power.
