With the advancement of technology, information is presented in various forms, such as printed books, newspaper, magazines and online platforms. However, the overwhelming volume of information can be hard to absorb quickly, and excessive text tends to feel monotonous. At such times, “motion infographics” become a vital medium for communication. By simplifying complex content through visual design and enhancing appeal with dynamic effects, motion infographics bring information to life, engaging viewers and improving communication efficiency.
Night markets are a representative part of Taiwanese culture, with a history spanning over a century. In addition to the wide variety of delicious foods, they also offer diverse games, daily necessities, and a lively atmosphere, becoming an important form of nighttime entertainment. Among these, “night market games” hold cherished childhood memories for many and reflect traces of early cultural exchange between Taiwan and the world. However, the origins and development of these games remain largely unknown. Therefore, this creative research focuses on the theme of “Taiwan night market game culture” and uses “motion infographics” to document and preserve the cultural features of Taiwan night market games, aiming to achieve cultural inheritance and promotion.
This creative research adopts literature review, field research, and case analysis methods. Field research was conducted by visiting major night markets to document the types of games and their gameplay. The scope was narrowed to eight common games: shooting games, claw machines, pinball, ring toss, goldfish scooping, shrimp fishing, mahjong bingo, and poking lottery. The literature review explored the development of night markets and the historical context of these games, serving as the subject matter for this creative research. Additionally, case analyses of static and motion infographics were conducted to inform the subsequent creation process. Four types of infographic formats—theme extension, axis-based, grid distribution, and chart-based—were used to create the content, which is presented through the dynamic medium of “animated infographics.”
This creative research“Night Market Trace”, focuses on the culture of Taiwan night market games, exploring the development and evolution of night markets and eight featured games. It develops 12 motion infographic posters. The content is divided into three series: Night Market Games Database, Taiwan Night Market Profiles, and Night Market Game Comparisons. The primary goal is to convey information through dynamic elements and sound effects. By dynamically showcasing the progression of each game, the information becomes more engaging while effectively communicating its message. Additionally, vivid colors and flat illustrations, paired with dynamic effects, present nostalgic games in a modern style, recording and promoting Taiwan’s valuable night market game culture.
