In this paper, two of my works, “Read My Friend” and “Those Relationships”, are raised while social media is taken as a core issue. Analyze and visualize the social content of conventional social media in real times, to create a unusual way to browse and interact with social media. Social feature, for example, the relationships of social members, the characters of social members, and the images/messages/related geo-location data shared from social members, are deconstructed and reconstructed to a new visual structure, and by using personal mobile device and Kinect camera to interact with.
The work “Read My Friend” in this paper pays an attention to geographic features of social media. By analyzing photos and related geo-location data shared from social members, this work transforms friends who belong to the audience in a social media to a diary. When an audience thumbs the diary page, he/she would be taken to the place where the page is written, browsing the message of the social member on a map. The work is trying to understand social members’ activity area more clearly by focus on the massage of a specific member, and making a bridge between virtual space and physical space.
Another work “Those Relationships” is to design a three-step visualization of social features. The first step is to create a geometrical structure with points and lines linked between points to show the relationship of social members. The second step is to show the common virtual social feature of the audience is/was in the same physical space, which is triggered by hand gestures. The third step is to analyze the relationship between social media data and city space, and turn the photo and geo-location into a visual experience. With the three-step visualization, this work is trying to make audiences think about what’s the purport of a social media for themselves, and what’s the role social media play in our life.
