My mother

國立臺灣藝術大學 / 廣播電視學系碩士班應用媒體藝術組 / Author:SUNG, MAO-CHANG

This documentary aims to investigate the life of the film maker’s mother, i.e. “Ina” in Paiwan. His mother is a Paiwan woman, who lives in the tribe settlement located deep in the mountains of Taiwan. She lost her husband at an early age, which made her live to face life with a tough attitude. Furthermore, with a lively, cheerful and enthusiastic character, she is deeply loved by the neighbors and her people. Moreover, “Ina”, the mother, relies on the Christian ideal, “loving God and loving people”. At the same time, she teaches her children to hold the same attitude to deal with people and things.

“Ina” means “mother” in the Paiwan language. The mother’s Mandarin name is “Song, Tsay-Meei”. In Paiwan, her name is “Nga-nga Cungan”. Traditionally, the Paiwan Tribe follows the nobility system. The film’s “Ina” is a member belongs to Kaaluwan chieftain family. For quite a long time, Paiwan people pay great respect to their chieftain with obedience. This could be observed from this “Ina”, who constantly visits the family of the chieftain and offers a part of her harvest as well. This is the authentic presentation of this traditional Paiwan culture.

This film was made from the viewpoint of religious faith, showing how “Ina” faces a huge natural disaster and the changes of the human relationship, when she endures great psychological trauma. From her words and behavior, we may find that she faced all the changes caused by the disaster with great peace. The Morakot typhoon disaster on August 8, 2009, is a huge strike to her life particularly; her whole household was washed away by the heavy rain in one night. However, she did not despair and even encouraged her children to believe that God has His will with profound meanings in this event. Owing to this, the documentary film-maker and also the writer of this paper attempts to explore how “Ina” faced the transience of life with her Christian faith, in the turning point of her life, which occurred after the typhoon disaster of August 8, 2009, and how the Christian faith has comforted her in the painful period.
