Many school wind band students find it difficult to continue cultivating or pursuing their passion for music after graduating. One of the reason being that there is little to no opportunity for them to perform or find a place in which to perform. They, therefore, resort to forming their own wind band consisting of graduate students with similar musical interests or talents. Members of the community try to assist by establishing bands in schools within their area. It is difficult though to maintain such bands, as there are many financial constraints as well as a shortage of manpower. Members thus often only stay for a short time and then leave the band. By presenting this research document I hope to provide some ideas and methods of helping such community bands to invite musically talented persons to join their bands and to promote an awareness of music within the community.

Through related books and documents I will discuss the following:

(a) Formation and development of orchestras

(b) The differences between bands and orchestras

(c) Comparisons bands abroad and local Taiwanese bands.

(i) Their development

(ii) Management

(iii) How they train the conductor

(iv) Professional training of band members

(v) Creating a musical culture within the community.

I visited some successful community concert bands to see how they manage their bands. Through their success we can learn and develop some methods of solving the problems we encounter in terms of maintaining our community concert bands.
