Application of Augmented Reality Technology in the Creation of “Non-Site”
This creative work, titled "Non-Site", is an augmented reality sandbox game. It aims to extend the concept of Expanded Field in land art by leveraging novel "markerless" augmented reality technology, Niantic Lightship, and image recognition technology, Google Cloud Vision API, to expand gameplay from the physical to the virtual world and break down the barrier between them.
The game features three main interfaces: explore, synthesis, and build. In the explore interface, players use Google Cloud Vision API to identify real-world objects and collect elements that correspond to the current explore target. In the synthesis interface, players can use previously collected elements to synthesize objects with corresponding elements. In the build interface, players use Niantic Lightship technology to locate themselves in the virtual space overlaid on the physical world and build previously synthesized objects.
This paper discusses Expanded Field, Niantic Lightship, and Google Cloud Vision API in order. It also explores the application of augmented reality technology for transforming between the physical and virtual worlds, using this creative work as an example. Through "Non-Site", we aim to discuss the new concept of Expanded Field brought about by augmented reality technology and provide a reference for future creators using Niantic Lightship as a development tool.
