The Study on Kuo Chih-yuan's Piano Solo "Variations and Fugue on an Ancient Taiwan Music"'s Cover

This paper mainly probes into the writing crafts and performance interpretations of Kuo Chih-yuan's "Variations and Fugue on an Ancient Taiwan Music".

The writer started from the growing environment and the times of Kuo to understand why he insists on creating Taiwanese style music.

At first part, in the creation and analysis of "Variations and Fugue on an Ancient Taiwan Music", the writer illustrated several differences between manuscript scores and published scores, then discuss the structure of the song and the materials applied.

At second part, in the performance interpretation of "Variations and Fugue on an Ancient Taiwan Music", the writer conferred the interpretation of this song in four parts: dynamic, voices, musical sentence phrases, and musicality. This paper also studies the techniques needed in playing this work, and probes into the performing skills and the way to practice.

The points in this paper were all interviewed and deeply discussed with the composer himself and hope to keep his original thought.
