Retreat × Art Cache
“Lu- Chu”, Chinese assonance of English word: retreat, means to withdraw, to retire; as a noun, means a place of refuge, seclusion, or privacy. The researcher derives this word as “a mental healing process through exile mind and body temporarily from reality to another boundary” from its original meaning; it also symbolizes the experiences and imaginations of journey that differ from traditional meanings. Roaming within this journey, “Yu- Yi” emphasizes and deepens the feeling of artistry. When a person is able to “travel” leisurely in daily and broaden the concept in order to practice the idea into real life, he or she can cultivate their own minds and explore richer experiences and meanings of aesthetics.
Using “Lu-Chu x Yu-Yi” as the theme of curating and focusing on individual’s demand, participating artists explored modern people’s daily presentation, interpersonal relationship and alienation from their creations through observing every different styles and activities of the consumer society. In order to conform to the specialty of the space (exhibition site was located in department store), the concept of “Art Cache” was created to interpret the exhibition and seek to change people’s stereotype from ordinary exhibitions. Artworks were placed differently in the department store or even into some counters, creating a game-like treasure hunting plan. Through the exhibition, the researcher looked forward to seeing how people examine themselves from the process of traveling “RETREAT” and “LU- CHU”; discovering hidden spiritual energy of every artwork, soak and turn energy into their own and set off again, facing the reality.
The aim of this research is to describe and record the process of curating, and discuss how contemporary visual artwork converts its identity into business consumer space through the operation and application of demonstration strategy. In addition, the researcher analyzed the purposes and efficiencies of artworks progressively. The way of demonstration of this research will narrate from the researcher with his education background and thinking, and focusing on professional evaluating, formats and decision making of curating itself. In the same time, the researcher seeks to evaluate his practical experiences during research institute and future development.
