The study aims to analyze zheng pieces with Beijing opera materials, and takes Wang Zhong-shan’s Misty Dawn and Wang Jian-min’s Rhyme Play as examples. Through the retrospect to the background of Beijing opera music, musical analysis and performing interpretation, it probes into how Beijing opera materials applied into zheng music.
During the research process, the author perceives that the two pieces both take advantage of the Xipi bridge and the beat-form variation; the Rhyme Play even applies melodies of Beijing opera as main pitch, and imitates Beijing opera music via acoustic explorations, using many new sound effects and techniques to express its content. Concerning the musical structure, two pieces both present the multi-section form, both taking the principle of beat-form variation in traditional drama and merging with western musical form to develop the musical content, and both set a non-traditional pentatonic tuning.
The study, based on musical analysis, probes into the composing backgrounds and methods of applications of Beijing opera music materials in the Misty Dawn and Rhyme Play, and thus suggests performers to start from the angle of material backgrounds, based on the musical style and traits of Beijing opera, to practice performance and interpretation; therefore, it will be much accurate to control the core images in the two pieces and enable listeners to feel the musical imageries through music.
