The ever-changing computer technology had prompted contemporary artists to create original objects with them. With the integration of traditional ink paintings, which were the irreplaceable charms of the West and digital technology, one would be able to bring in a unique taste of art into his style.

The motivation of the present research was divided into three parts: 1. With the help of computer comes countless possibilities of art creations 2. Ink animations have a far-reaching and dynamic charm. 3. Animation and comic styles are contemporary art creation approaches. With the traditional Chinese opera character, Monkey King and ink animations, the present study aimed to promote traditional Chinese cultures, which were the frequent focus of overseas animation studios. Several points were documented during the systematic, independent art creating process, including character designs, shooting scripts, art styles, and the use of style-testing programs. The software adopted were Photoshop, After Effects, and Premiere, whose applications in animation were recorded in detail for other art creators’ references.

The present creator was interested in Monkey King, the protagonist in the traditional Chinese novel Journey to the West. With the story as the starting point, a role of a naughty little boy was created. The Magic Picture represented people and objects with ink painting style, while the settings were made with coloring painting style. In between, the furniture appeared with thin, white lines, and with the appearance of the protagonist, the white and the colorful intersected, showing a unique taste only found in contemporary ink animations. The Magic Picture was first manually drawn in the 2D style and later edited with post-production tools. Through the creation process of The Magic Picture, this study not only explored the procedure of animation making but also discussed Taiwanese ink animations and examined how they differed from Chinese ones.

As a newcomer of ink animations, the researcher encountered several concerns: 1. How to draw back washes as smoothly and effectively as The Pastoral Flute, a successful Chinese ink animation 2. Unfamiliarity with the software 3. Adopt only After Effects or more 4. Whether to arrange an educational ending.

Suggestions were given to future ink animation creators: 1. Have a decided way of painting in mind and test the style before starting. 2. Use Painter to create ink painting drafts. 3. Adopt Premiere for editing animations in the post-production phase. Hopefully, with this study, the level of ink animation would be pushed forward as a result.
