This study examined Chen Huan Zhen’s work of figure sculptures. It explored the
sources and functions of Chen’s realistic figures, and how Chen’s work was influenced
by the impact of Buddhist statues. Showing characteristics of inner delicate and outer
dignified, Chen’s female figures were immersed in Buddhist philosophy to express his
emotions. Using human sentiment and Buddhist spirit as his inspiration, Chen’s work
combined Eastern traditional culture symbols and modern culture symbols to integrate the
subjectivity of the figures. This study examined the origin of this integration and the
spiritual connotations generated from the form of Chen’s work, as well as investigated
the symbolic meaning of this cultural system. Through Chen’s aesthetic viewpoint, this
study aimed to pinpoint how figure sculptures differs than traditional figure statues. It is
intended to show how notions and forms of such artistic representation can characterize
contemporary social-cultural atmosphere
