THE DECADE is a feature film infusing wuxia and glove puppetry in one. Illustrating the story between Bei Hu-Ming and Gi Shao-Qin. The two once best friends set a pact to duel in ten years after a revenge battle unfolded. They set out to chase dreams, but found themselves going through much tragedy and suffering in life, choosing to go down very different paths.
The film utilize glove puppetry as the medium to bring forth the theme of “dreams”. Creating a glove puppetry film is not only a dream of the creator, it is also one of the most unique form of Taiwanese artistry. Production of similar kind has been blooming over the past decades. However, other than glove puppetry production houses, there has been very few independent creations of glove puppetry films. So it is the hope of the creator to begin a trend of independent production to entice more individuals to enter into similar production.
The total length of the film is eighty-eight minutes, using Blackmagic Cinema Camera filming in full high-definition 1080P, presenting in both Mandarin and Taiwanese voice over versions. Other than using “dreams” as the theme for the story, the film also incorporate wuxia and historical elements. Character, costumes, props and art designs all referenced the historical period of which the dynasty the story is set in. Post production also incorporated 3D animation to further enhance the visuals in order to better tell the story.
This film is a rarity because there has been no previous student film using glove puppetry as the story telling device. During production, the creator ran into many challenges. While it was difficult, the production process, as life imitates art, further solidify the theme of the story between chasing dreams and facing reality. Thus, more so bring forth the central theme of the film - preciousness of achieving one’s dreams.
This thesis includes the creative concept and production process, describing the creative conceptualization and execution from pre-produciton to post-production. With the process documented, this paper hope to provide a reference for future creative glove puppetry enthusiasts to make their own films.
