Essay of the Short Film”Stavia”

國立臺北藝術大學 / 電影創作學系碩士班 / Author:Weng, Kyle-Yi

"Stavia" is a short film that tells the story of Xiao-Chun, a woman working away from home, who takes a leave of absence to accompany her parents through their divorce. Throughout the film, Xiao-Chun maintains a calm and mature demeanor as she witnesses the end of her parents' marriage. However, after everything has been settled and a new family dynamic begins to take shape, Xiao-Chun awkwardly distances herself from her family.

The theme of this film explores the awkward emotions experienced by adult children as they gain independence from their families. On one hand, independence allows them to face life with a more mature attitude, but on the other, they sometimes still desire emotional dependency. When confronted with these conflicting feelings, they may awkwardly avoid or fail to address them, which is what this film seeks to portray.

The essay will begin by explaining the inspiration and research process behind the initial stages of the project. It will then delve into the aesthetic aspects of the film through an analysis of its themes, genre, script, and stylistic choices. Finally, the discussion will conclude with a review of the production process, a creative journal, and a final assessment.
