Tainan is the first capital of Taiwan. There are plentiful and diverse folk customs and religious beliefs. Many temples are situated in Tainan and form the local cultural characteristic. At the same time, it is also an important city of the Taiwanese traditional crafts with many cultural assets, temples, and historic sites. The city has played a significant part in the historical and cultural development and is therefore called “the ancient capital of culture.” With the different customs, habits, and lifestyles brought by the ancestors from the different places, the culture is loaded with the ancestors’ wisdom, emotion, and daily life and regarded as the essence of the hard work and numerous experiences of the ancestors. With the rapid development in modern society, many traditional crafts have gradually declined. Through this creation, it is hoped to arouse the public’s attention to the preservation of the traditional crafts and local culture.

The creative study focuses on the “book creation and design” and intends to express the local cultural value through the major content of the traditional crafts of temples in Tainan. First, the literature review of the related theories on book design will help to grasp the basic framework and understand the gist of book design. As for the content, through the in-depth interviews, the professionals’ development process, cultural heritage, techniques, and local characteristics will be recorded in details. The rich collection of the images and words will become the precious content of the book. The Traditional Crafts of Temples in Tainan will further be translated into the visual elements and combined with the book creation and design. The representative three crafts are “divine statue decoration, embroidery, and silver crowns.” The tradition will be integrated with the contemporary elements and transformed into the creative materials to manifest the local cultural value and present the spirit of the time.
