[摘要]

Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951) is one of the most important composers in the 20th century. His atonal music deteriorates the traditional harmonic language and leads a new trend in music theory. Schoenberg’s small-scale choral work Peace on Earth was composed in 1907. The lyrics are written by German realist poet Conrad Ferdinand Meyer (1825-1898). This work is dated from his atonal era; however, it reveals compositional techniques from his twelve-tone period.

This thesis is divided into four chapters, respectively: the formation of Schoenberg’s atonal music, Meyer’s poem Peace on Earth, research and analysis of Schoenberg’s Peace on Earth , and interpretation of Schoenberg’s Peace on Earth.

Chapter one focuses on Schoenberg’s life, his compositional styles, and the characteristics of his atonal music.

Chapter two concentrates on biography of the poet, his works and religious aspects. Due to limited bibliographical information and lack of adequate relevant evidence, discussions on subjects such as poet’s characters, his belief toward Christianity were not possible.

Chapter three deals with issues such as Meyer’s poetry, the poetic analysis and extra-poetic meaning which connects with music and painting.

Chapter four discusses subjects on orchestration and different performing editions of this work. Schoenberg arranged this unaccompanied choral work into an orchestral accompanied edition in 1911.
