Performing Interpretation and Study of Tyzen Hsiao’s Cello Concerto in C, Op. 52

Taiwanese composer, Tyzen Hsiao, composed three concertos among all of his works, including Violin Concerto in D(1988), Piano Concerto in C minor(1991)and Cello Concerto in C(1990). Tyzen Hsiao had achieved the peak of his composing career after these concertos were completed. Cello Concerto in C is the only one among these concertos whose premiere was held in Taiwan by cellist Carol Ou and Taipei Symphony Orchestra in 1992 at the Taipei Culture Center.

This thesis contains basic analysis of form, harmony and orchestration. The research will focus on comparing two versions recording and score revision. The first version was recorded by cellist Felix Fan and conductor Yoav Talmi with San Diego Symphony in 1995. The other one was recorded by Russian cellist Kirill Rodin and conductor Yoav Talmi with Russian Federal Orchestra in 2003. About the score which be used to analyze, compareing to the both recordings in this thesis is the original score which had been used in Tyzen Hsiao Music Festival, was held in Kaohsiung, 2003.

By the support of the author’s personal experience, this research process had analyzed and discussed these two versions in several objective ways, including the simulating of two musician’s interpretation, tempo testing each period of two recordings by using metronome, and the comparing between the original score and two versions, including the differences of rhythm, notes and articulations.

Tyzen Hsiao’s cello concerto is not only rare but huge within the cello concertos composed by Taiwanese composers. He made this concerto full of precious cultural value by successfully combining native element and cello playing. The purposes of this thesis is to providing cello players, educators and researchers some interpretation references of Tyzen Hsiao’s Cello Concerto in C and more choices be supplied when looking for cello works. Finally, this research is looking foward to provide more possibilities of this concerto to be known or used in the future.
