This thesis is intended for the author to explore the importance of timbre and timbral variety in his own works. Contemporary music is a general term which refers to music in the twentieth-century which has no unified or easily defined single style. There were a variety of innovative ideas prevailing during this period, such as Impressionism, twelve-tone music, Serialism, aleatoric music, Neoclassical music and Electronic music. Among them, atonal music, Serialism, aleatoric music and Electronic music inspired diverse possibilities of musical structure and performance practice in the twentieth-century, while at the same time strengthening the depth, expressive power and technical difficulty of the music. This thesis delves into my compositions by discussing the major trends in modern music, as well as explores the compositional background and musical analyses of my compositions. I hope through writing this thesis readers will be able to better understand contemporary music as a whole, as well as better appreciate my compositions which I have composed with all of my heart during my graduate studies.
