The main theme of this thesis is an analysis and interpretation of Franz Schubert’s (1797-1828) Drei Klavierstücke, D946. Schubert’s piano solo works include piano sonatas, Moments musicaux, Impromptus, and so on. These pieces demonstrate Schubert's daring harmonic language and his gift for lyricism. Drei Klavierstücke, D946 consists of three piano pieces composed by Schubert in his later years which were collected and edited by the German composer Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) in 1868. The harmonic writing is radical for Schubert's time, and the music itself with alternate tears and smiles, all of which demonstrate Schubert's skill at musical characterization.

This thesis contains five chapters. Chapter one, includes the research motive, purpose, scope and method. Chapter two is divided into three parts. The first part provides a brief overview of Schubert’s biography, the second briefly discusses the musical style of his solo piano works, and the third is a summary of the background of publishing Drei Klavierstücke, D946. Chapter three is a musical analysis of Drei Klavierstücke, D946, discussing Schubert's use of melody, harmony, tempo and rhythm. Chapter four is based on the findings which emerged from the analysis presented in the previous chapter, and perform on the piano, puts forward ideas and suggestions for the interpretation of Drei Klavierstücke, D946. Chapter five is the conclusion.
