Folk songs, drama, and poetry are usually used by composers as materials. Composers extract the melody as an inspiration to enrich the content of various kinds of music themes, or directly use the tune of folk songs. Through a full understanding, grasping the traits of folk music, and combining personal’s recognition and feelings, a composer may create music pieces with unique style.

Composer Zhou Chenglong used different materials to compose relevant Erhu tunes. For example, he took the Amis Tribe’s folk song, Dance Music of watching Moon, as materials to compose an erhu tune the Amis Tribe’s Dance Music; took Ten Big Sisters in Yunnan Guizhou operas as materials to compose an erhu tune the Festive Lantern; took LiBai’s Poem, YìQín'é, as materials to compose an erhu tune the Qín'é’s yearning. The researcher expected to realize how the composer Zhou Chenglong chose these materials through the researching process, which will be a reference for erhu performers while doing interpretation or teaching.

Through the direct interview with the composer Zhou Chenglong, the investigation of composer’s idea and composing methods, and the analyses towards the three pieces Amis Tribe’s Dance Music, Festive Lanter, and Qín'é’s yearning, the researcher concluded that if a composer could combine folk music with local culture which make one’s pieces more popular, it would be a great dedication for the development and dissemination of playing erhu.
