Mendelssohn is one of the most important composers in Romantic times. The skills of his works combine counterpoints of Baroque and harmony in Classic times, and add the romantic spirit in his music. This thesis is going to deeply explore Mendel’s work—Psalm 95. This work was adopted cantata as the structure due to the influence of Johann Sebastian Bach’s religious works.

In the beginning, the thesis is going to discuss the origin of cantata, and the influence of religious revolution aroused by the spread of cantata in German. This make the composers produced lots of religious music by Germany at that time. Johann Sebastian Bach also produced many cantata works, and created a set of model of cantata in this trendy.

The second part is about Mendelssohn’s background and his musical development. Because of Mendelssohn was born in a wealthy family and his parents were very care about his education, he has unique sense in literature and art. He always expresses bright and lyric characteristic and concept in his music.

In the last part of the dissertation is the analysis and research of Psalm 95. The first one is talking about the religious reference in this work—Psalm 95. The second one is focus on the analysis in this music, and the research about annotation and performance in conduct.

Mendelssohn’s religious works are not received attention in Taiwan, so the purpose and aim of this thesis are to attract more people to find out and enjoy the beauty of Mendelssohn’s music.
