“Daydreams in Metropolitan Cities: Creation-Thesis of Wing-yee Wong” is the record of the author while studied as a master student in printmaking from 2016 to 2020. The author hopes to find out her identity, her relationship to the city through the art works. A better and clearer picture of the link between the creations, the city and the author can be established eventually.
The journey starts from day dreaming during travel. It is divided into four chapters. The introduction is about the motivation and intention of the journey. After years of study in Taipei, the author would like to explore the meaning of this journey and aim to reorganize and start on the road again.
The second chapter has three sections, each section is a closely related - series. The first section is “Utopia”, followed by “Sailing in Life” and “Bizarre Encounter”. Each section is supported and explained by different theories. The first section “Utopia” leads to the understanding of daydreaming. Plato’s “The Republic” help to find out the shape of utopia. Cage is used as as a metaphor to represent home and form the basic building unit in the Utopia. The second section is “Sailing in Life”. This section is about the journey and define the role of the flâneur. The author reviews the identity as “Hongkonger” during the journey and hope to find the other options between the binary opposition. Map compresses time and space and is the inspiration of this series. The third section “Bizarre Encounter” is about those weird things in the city. It discusses how the spectacles arises in the society. The section tries to show how emptiness of people turn into various kind of desires and fetishism.
Chapter three shows the exhibition plan and the contents. This chapter divided into to two sections. It first describes the meaning of “Hidden in the City” then followed by the explanation of what is “The home of carbs”, which is the exhibition venue. It is a dwell for the author to hide in the city. The second section elaborates and explains the process and concepts of these three series.
The last chapter concludes how the author turns different perspective views of the city into her creation. A new way to get along with the city is established eventually.
