This thesis aims to study XiJinQiao(西金橋), a Beiguan new style theater music, performed by Wu Qian-hui at her graduation concert. It focuses on interpreting and analyzing the versions of XiJinQiao taught by two Beiguan masters, Mr. Chuang Chin-tsai from Yilan and Mr. Cheng Hsia-miao from Changhua. Firstly, the text is discussed; the existing scripts of Chuangi(傳奇)and Zaju(雜劇)are searched for the possible origin of the story in XiJinQiao. Next, the versions imparted by the above-mentioned two Beiguan musicians are contrasted with those found in the Drama Collection of Che’s Palace in Qing Dynasty and in the Beijing opera in order to find out the distinctions in presentation among these versions. Finally, a comparison is made between the kinds of music in XiJinQiao taught by these two masters respectively in terms of the following six melo-metric tunes: erhuang(二黃), erhuangerban(二黃二板), daoban(倒板), xipi(西皮), manshuangban(慢雙板)and erban(二板), so as to discover how the same Beiguan opera may be interpreted differently as a result of following different masters.
