Literary works have lots of influences on Arts, such as drama, music, paintings and so on. This document takes Fouqué’s novel “Undine” and Reinecke’s “Sonata for Flute and Piano, ‘Undine’, Op.167” for example. We will discuss how musical interpretation makes new appearances for literary works. It starts with an introduction, and discussion about how Romanticism goes on in Germany of 19th Century, and then the life and creating background of Fouqué and Reinecke. Followed by a brief study of the novel “Undine”, explore the technique of expression differences between novel and sonata via connecting the images of the two works with their interpretation by analyzing formal structure, and especially emphasizing the characteristics of program music, telling stories with music. Reinecke’s “Sonata for Flute and Piano, ‘Undine’, Op.167” reinterprets the plots and emotions in Fouqué’s novel “Undine”, thus, when people listen to the music, they can come up with corresponding images with the melody lines.
