The Purpose of this thesis is to discuss the use of
compositional techniques in the performance of Franz Liszt’s “Grandes Etudes de Paganini” No.3 “La campanella” and No.6 “Theme and variations”.
This thesis is divided into seven chapters. It starts from the inception of Virtuoso in Romanticism. Franz Liszt’s lifetime and the development of Etude in 19th century are briefly described in the thesis. The author analyzes these two Etudes in written way. With the specialists’ suggestion and the author’s experience, she also provides readers the practicing way of performance techniques.
All of the technical discoveries and stylistic innovations which Liszt made are included in the Etudes. Problems dealing with performance techniques will be discussed in detail.
