Yellow Butterfly Festival (YBF) in Meinung, a local activity of arts and humanities thrived via the anti-Meinung dam movement, inherits the lineage of social movement. The inauguration of “ Yellow Butterfly Valley Ecological Treaty Plaque” in 1995 vowed the human determinations of respecting the Nature. Moreover,“ The Public Voting of Yellow Butterfly Valley Ecological Park” was held in 1997 cohering the local identification of the common consensus of “ Ecological Park”. Furthermore, the battle cry of “Hasten Delivery of Yellow Butterfly Valley Ecological Park” in 2000 converted the power of obstruction into creative and progressive thoughts. After 2001, the spirit of ecological restoration was expanded to the reservations of Hakka culture, industry and language in Meinung.
However, the movement gradually turned to a routine activity after 18 years development showed the difficulty of reflecting the key value of yellow butterfly festival, re-think over the interactions and look for the sustainable interdependent prospects of rural ecology between human and Nature. Are there any modern strategies better reflection of local historical context? How do arts have the people attention and become a public topic? How do the festival and transient activities have deeply connections with local society? Are there any gateway and method instead of exhibitions?
With the six years experiences of the field study, the author used New Genre Public Art as method and “ Satoyama Initiative” as theory in this project to connect the environmental viewpoints and ecological prospects of YBF held from first movement to current one intending to change the routine activity through the arts. Furthermore, the author also tried to strengthen the currently cultural achievements of YBF via arts to resolve the crises and predicaments found in the fields. Finally, the author sincerely want to use arts and humanities to make “charming and magical timing” consistently dispersing touching shine.
