Owing to the fast growth of society and economy, life has become prosperous and stable. People now start to pursue spiritual growth other than material needs, hence devoting themselves to volunteer works. Happiness and achievements are acquired through participating in volunteer works, as well as self-accomplishment. Museums often utilize volunteers as the human resource under the circumstances of limited manpower and budgets. This approach does not only save costs, but also expand the scale of service. Therefore, to keep the volunteers, museums should try to understand their motivation and give them encouragements or rewards to keep them staying in the service.
This research focuses on the motives and the experiences, as well as the museum system of managing the volunteer workers of Yingge Ceramics Museum. It applies both the in-depth interviews and surveys with the museum volunteers which aims at studying the motivations, the gains of the volunteer workers, and the reasons that keep the volunteers to continue their participation in the services as the reference for other institutions in the development of volunteer works.
The research shows that the volunteers in the pottery museum are highly willing to provide their services and continue to dedicate themselves to the museum because of the satisfaction gaining from the services, motivation generating from the process of providing services and the good management system of the museum. As the museum volunteers, they have the opportunities to learn the art of pottery, to inherit the local culture, to repay the society, to utilize their leisure time, to expand their life scope, to elevate the art culture, to recognize self-value and to know better of their hometown. Moreover, the friendship between the volunteers, their devotion to the museum, as well as the well-constructed communication channel, their respect and care and the well-constructed educational training provided by the museum are the major reasons that continued engaging their participation and service.
