An Analysis and Interpretation of Two Arias of Nemorino, L’elisir D’amore, by Donizetti / Graduation Concert

Abstract

Gaetano Donizetti was one of the leading composers of the earlier stage of Romantic Period, devoted to both opera seria and opera buffa with masterpieces in various styles. His compositions was influence by Gioachino Rossini and and Vincenzo Bellini. The three composers wrote bravura works for the stage during what musicologists sometimes call the "bel canto era" and enlighted the following glorious development of Italian operas.

This research was focused on the two tenor arias of Nemorino from L’elisir d’amore. First part of the thesis is the background of bel canto operas, opera buffa, the compositions of Gaetano Donizetti, and L’elisir d’amore. The second part is the compositional analysis on the two arias from the musical score and the also the stage interpretation by two tenors.

The findings were based the study of the role and story, and the combining of emotion and expression with composition clues. The aim of this thesis is for the theoretical and lyrical understanding devoted to future performances.
