This thesis is focused on the Cello Sonata in A major by César Franck. The discussion firstly traces the historical backgrounds of the composition, with an aim to understand better its idioms, styles and characters. In addition, a comparison between the Classical sonata form and the one applied in this cello sonata will be made. Other analyses will include the development of different materials and the musical expressions thus produced, as well as some interpretative thoughts on performance.
