The musical 《Les Misérables》 is based on Victor Hugo’s (1802-1885) novel of the same name. It was the novel Hugo took the longest time to write. This novel reflects the social unrest during Hugo’s life. It was a realistic portrayal of ruthlessness, societal change, and the struggle freedom. The content of the story is vivid and is profoundly self reflective. Since then, Victor Hugo’s novel has been adapted musically by French composers Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublilin French. After Cameron Mackintosh rearranged the music and language, the English version of the musical《Les Misérables》was officially launched. Since then, a film version of the musical has been released retaining its original structure. This thesis presents the history of the evolution of the musical《Les Misérables》from the epic novel. This thesis also analyzes the emotional and artistic characteristics of the main character Jean Valjean, singer of the two classic songs “Who am I ?” and “Bring him home”.
