An Analysis and Interpretation of “Oboe Sonata” by Paul Hindemith

Paul Hindemith was a representative German composer in the twentieth century, and an outstanding music performer and educator of the time. His composition mixed by Baroque characteristics and his unique techniques which reveals New Objectivity style. Besides he used his theories which Unterweisung im Tonsatz ( The Craft of Musical Composition) mentioned of, “Oboe Sonata” is a piece combines these ideas.

For players who perform “Oboe Sonata” could correspond the conception of composer, this dissertation has five chapters include an overview of composer’s life and composition techniques. The first chapter are motive, purpose and method of research. The second chapter describes the biography of Paul Hindemith and his composition’s style. The third chapter analyzes the skills and structure which use in “Oboe Sonata”. The forth chapter gives an interpretation. The fifth chapter is a conclusion summarizes previous discussions.
